We had a terrific first day! Each child was very excited to able to choose his/her own desk! We learned about new classroom routines, fire drills, and a little bit about each other. We attended a whole school community meeting to welcome everyone. At the meeting the PBIS team reviewed our school's "Bobcat Behavior" expectations of being safe, respectful, and responsible. The whole school will be working on improving cafeteria behavior this fall. We read about "Scaredy Squirrel" and his first day at school. It was a funny story and the kids enjoyed it. The poor critter was SO confused about going to school. We had some good discussion about WHY the story was funny.
All of the kids were SUPER excited about their binders! Their binders will travel daily between home and school. Today we added some homework resources to the binder: a number grid, a handwriting chart, and a high frequency word spelling list. These tools will remain in the homework binder all year so that your child has them to use when working at home. Throughout the year we will add additional resources as needed. We have resources at school when we work, your child should have them when he/she works at home. This afternoon we did a science experiment to dye rice using food coloring and rubbing alcohol. Ask your child what color rice we made and how we did it! When the kids arrive in the morning they will be able to check out the finished product, they can't wait! Our day ended with Ms. Chalson and Art class. The kids drew a self-portrait that would be returned to them when they are in sixth grade. They also discussed some projects that second graders work on during the year in art class. LOTS of papers came home today. Please try to complete and return them before the end of the week. Thanks!
