Here are a few details to make your child’s school adventure run smoothly.
A
At Home Routines
It will be important to maintain a school-day routine for your child. The consistency of the routine will be reassuring to your child. Create and post a schedule for the day and stick to it. Designate a time you expect your child to be up and out of bed. Maintaining a consistent bed-time is especially important. Remember to designate specific times on your at-home schedule for activities such as completing homework, packing backpacks, and laying out clothing for the next day.
Clothing
Require your child to get dressed each morning, it promotes a sense of productiveness. Laying out clothing the night before can help streamline the morning routine.
School clothing and footwear should be comfortable for both sitting in class and active recess play. Make sure your child is able to manipulate the buttons, snaps, zippers, etc... that is part of their clothing so they can be as independent as possible. We have a natural playground on a hillside, so flip-flops are not the best choice.
Supplies
If you haven't already, work with your child to set up a learning station in your home. (Make sure it is up and away from animals and little fingers!) Give your child the responsibility of maintaining the learning station and keeping it clutter-free. It forms a good habit right from the beginning! Your child will need:
Snack and Lunch
Again, this year your child can access a free breakfast at snack time or a free lunch. All you need to do is to sign up on the Nutrislice Ap the night before. Click here for our current menu and to order lunches.
Snack and lunch times are very important in school. For some students it is their favorite time of day! If sending in food/drink from home, please make sure your child is able to open the container(s) independently. It is also a good idea to talk with your child so s/he knows which items are for lunch and which are for snack.
Additionally, we encourage our students to drink lots of water in order to stay hydrated. Please send your child to school with a water bottle each day. We have water bottle filling stations in the building for refilling.
Recess
For many students, this is their favorite part of the school day! Unless the weather is extremely cold or bad, students at NBCS go outside for recess. Students need to come to school each day with appropriate clothing to be outside. Please keep in mind that NBCS has a natural playground on a hillside. Sturdy footwear (not flip-flops) is important. In the winter, our students are allowed to go sledding and play in the snow if they have appropriate clothing.
HINT: It is always a good idea to have a gallon sized baggie with a complete change of clothes in your child's backpack just in case they get wet, messy, or have an accident.
Class Website
Your child can access NBCS teacher websites via a link on the NBCS homepage and clicking on the house icon next to your child's teacher's name.
