Here are a few details to make your child’s school adventure run smoothly.
Clothing The 'layered' look is definitely a smart choice for school. For example, shorts and a short sleeve shirt with a sweatshirt over it for the cool mornings. It is also a good idea for your child to keep a sealed plastic bag with an extra change of clothes in his/her backpack. This is 'insurance' against a random spill, wet socks, or other accident. Please update this bag seasonally so we don't end up with shorts in January!
Supplies Your child will need:
- a backpack
- a 1" binder
- a pocket folder to clip into the binder
- a zippered pencil pouch to clip into the binder
- a pencil box
Lunch Accounts Money for snacks, hot lunch, and milk is processed through a debit system. Parents deposit money into their child’s account here at school. Each time your child purchases a hot lunch or milk the money for it is deducted from their account. All deposits are handled by the kitchen. Money can be sent to school any day, in any amount. Please make sure all money is sent to school in an envelope labeled with both your child's name and his/her teacher's name.
Most parents have found that the debit system is easiest to use when a ‘chunk’ ($25, $50, $100, etc…) of money is deposited. This makes deposits less frequent (bi-monthly, monthly, quarterly, etc…) and the morning hunt for lunch and milk money is eliminated. You will even be notified when your child’s account is running low!
Hot lunch for students is $2.65 and includes milk. If children bring their lunch ('cold lunch') they may buy milk for 50 cents. Milk is also available at snack time for 50 cents. A variety of low-fat milk choices will be available. The lunch menu is available for viewing on the school's web site.
Snack Snack time is very important in school. Please make sure that your child has a snack every day. The school sells healthy snacks each day. Prices range from 50-75 cents. Students are allowed to purchase one food item for snack each day.
Plan on your child eating one or two things at snack! The children are very hungry when we snack around 9:15am. Please make sure your child knows what’s for snack and what’s for lunch! Healthy snacks are strongly encouraged!
Please send your child to school with a plastic water bottle (Labeled of course!) every day. Since our classroom is warm, we need to stay hydrated and healthy!
Popcorn and Ice Cream On Wednesdays the P.T.A. sells bags of popcorn at snack time, also for 50 cents. On Fridays the children can buy ice cream novelties after lunch for 50 cents. These items are purchased with cash only.
Your child should have his/her own place to keep his/her money safe. A wallet or coin purse tucked into a lunch box or backpack is great! I will work with the children all year about being responsible for their money; for example, not leaving it exposed in/on their desk!
Dismissal The end of our day is quite hectic. Please send a note to school with your child if he/she has a different schedule that day after school. (For example: Please dismiss Katie with the walkers today. Her dad will pick her up.) If I do not have a note from you, I will dismiss your child according to the usual after school schedule. Notes on paper are preferred as I cannot guarentee email messages will be read before dismissal.
If your child is determined to take the bus that first day, but you’d like to drive them in……compromise by letting them take the bus and then meet them at school!
Lost and Found Please label ALL of your child’s belongings. Lost and found fills up quickly with everything from mittens to backpacks. Labeling EVERYTHING will save you time, money, and frustration. I will make every effort to find owners of items left behind in the classroom. Items lost outside of the classroom are usually delivered to the school's lost and found bin. The school usually spreads out the lost and found items twice annually, before holiday break and again at the end of the year. You are welcome to come check the bin at any time.
Class Website Our class website can be accessed by going to the school’s website (www.nbcs.k12.nh.us) and clicking on Teacher Websites. You will then see a listing for our class. Click on the house icon to be directed you our page. I would like to encourage all families to use this site. It will be updated often. I will send you an e-mail notification whenever new information is added.
I am really looking forward to working with you and your child this year! I hope to see you at our annual “Back to School Night” on September 24th at 6:40pm. This is an opportunity for me to share specifics with you about your child’s classroom.
Please do not hesitate to contact me at school if you have any questions.
